Flood relief project concludes: SRSO celebrates achievements and Learns for the Future

Dr Abdul Waheed Mastoi
SUKKUR: Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO) successfully concluded its project “Integrated Emergency Health, Protection, and WASH Response for Vulnerable Flood-Affected Communities” with a closing workshop held at its main complex. The project, spanning eight months from May to December 2023, aimed to alleviate the plight of flood-stricken communities in Khairpur and Mirpurkhas districts.
The closing workshop gathered all project team members from both districts, SRSO senior management, sector heads, and district managers. It served as a platform for sharing valuable insights, challenges faced, and lessons learned during implementation.
Naimatullah Sawand, SRSO Project Focal Person, presented a detailed report on the achieved targets, key learnings, and future directions based on the project’s objectives and outcomes. Fayyaz Shah, Country Coordinator for Malteser International, the project’s funding partner, joined virtually and expressed his appreciation for the achievements and SRSO’s collaborative spirit.
To acknowledge the contributions of all team members and major contributors, SRSO presented them with commemorative shields and visibility kits. The celebratory atmosphere continued with a musical evening.
The project, implemented in five flood-affected Union Councils of Thari Mirwahh (Khairpur) and Jhudho (Mirpurkhas), addressed critical needs in the aftermath of the devastating floods. Through the collaborative efforts of SRSO and Malteser International, funded by AAD and GFFO, the project:
Increased access to vital medicines and supplies for targeted communities.
Constructed gender-appropriate latrines, promoting sanitation and hygiene.
Provided preventive and response protection services for vulnerable individuals.
Improved the nutritional status of pregnant and lactating women, malnourished children, and persons with disabilities through access to food.
The successful completion of this project demonstrates SRSO’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities during times of crisis. The lessons learned and best practices gathered through this experience will further strengthen future interventions and ensure comprehensive support for those facing humanitarian challenges.
