SUKKUR: a symbolic act of tackling counterfeit trade, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) publicly incinerated crores of rupees worth of fake cigarettes seized in Sukkur and surrounding districts. This haul represents years of dedicated efforts by the IREN Squad to protect consumers and businesses from harmful and illegal products.
The seized cigarettes, accumulated over four years of operations across Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Qamber Shahdadkot, Ghotki, and Khairpur, were estimated to be valued between ten and twelve crore rupees. Officials, including Commissioner of Income Tax Sukkur Abid Raza Bodla and DC in charge of IREN Squad Muhammad Yaqoob Rajpar, witnessed the burning ceremony held in the city’s site area
These fake cigarettes not only pose a serious health risk to consumers but also undermine legitimate businesses and harm government revenue,” stated Bodla. “Through these operations, we are sending a strong message that the FBR is committed to cracking down on illegal activities and protecting the integrity of the market.
The destruction of these counterfeit goods highlights the ongoing challenges posed by illicit trade in Pakistan. Counterfeit cigarettes often contain harmful ingredients and lack proper quality control, putting consumer health at risk. Additionally, they deprive the government of valuable tax revenue, impacting essential services and development.
The FBR, through its IREN Squad, has intensified its efforts to combat counterfeit trade. This public burning ceremony serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against such harmful practices and the commitment of the authorities to safeguard public health and economic well-being.
