SUKKUR: National cricketer Sohaib Maqsood has accused the Sindh Police of asking for a bribe and said that he is lucky that he lives in Punjab and not in Sindh.
In one of his statements on social media, cricketer Sohaib Maqsood, who is a part of the national team, said that we are very lucky that we live in Punjab and not in Sindh.
He said that I am traveling from Karachi to Multan by road for the first time in my life along with my fellow cricketer Amir Yameen and the Sindh police are so corrupt that they stop you after every 50 km and ask for money or you for no reason.
They said that if you bribe them, after 50 km they will stop you and then ask for money.
Sohaib Maqsood said that corruption is on the rise in Sindh Police.
He said that we told the policemen that we are international cricketers, we are going to Multan after our match in Karachi, but they still took 8 thousand rupees and then let us go.
In his post, the cricketer did not specify the location where the incident took place, however, later speaking to the private news channel, he clarified that the incident took place on a road near Sikrund.
Later, cricketer Aamir Yameen tagged cricketer Sohaib Maqsood’s statement on Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, former Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and the official account of Sindh Police on social media.
Sohaib Maqsood said the policemen inquired about the vehicle’s use of high beam lights and warned of a possible fine of Rs 1 lakh.
“I told the official that it is not their jurisdiction to check documents and if the traffic police stops us, they will usually impose a fine of up to Rs 2,500,” the cricketer said.
After that he threatened to take us to the police station, we were traveling in Sindh for the first time, so after a conversation we gave the official Rs 8,000, the incident scared us, added Sohaib Maqsood.
He said that after this incident, his car was stopped again by the police after 30 to 40 km but we did not stop, after that we stopped at a hotel in Sukkur where we spent the night.
After the statements of the cricketers came out, IG Sindh Police Rafat Mukhtiar took notice of cricketer Amir Yameen’s post and ordered an immediate investigation to DIG Shaheed Benazirabad.
According to the Sindh Police spokesperson, IG Sindh said that strict action should be taken against the officials involved in the incident regarding the bribery of national cricketers on the Super Highway between 12 and 1 o’clock last night.
After the order of IG Sindh, DIG Shaheed Benazirabad Parvez Chandio said in his report that 4 policemen of Sikrund police have been found involved in the incident, who have been arrested and formal FIR has been registered against them and legal proceedings have started.
He further said that during the operation, the SHO of the Sikrand police station has been suspended for being guilty of negligence and carelessness.
