Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, has died at the age of 92, ending the Cold War without bloodshed.

In 1985, at the age of 54, he became the General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party. He introduced a policy of limited political and economic freedom to restore the system, but his reforms could not be implemented.
Mikhail Gorbachev introduced another policy called ‘glasnost’, or ‘freedom of expression’, which was intended to allow criticism of the party and the state, but it also encouraged nationalists to invade Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia and Baltic republics can press for independence.
