Stray Cattle menace in Sukkur: Accidents rise, Residents demand action

Dr Abdul Waheed Mastoi
SUKKUR: A growing number of stray cattle roaming Sukkur’s streets poses a safety hazard, leading to an increase in traffic accidents and raising concerns among residents. Unmanaged stray cattle wander freely, day and night, in residential and commercial areas, including major roads. Motorists struggle to navigate around these animals, often sleeping on roads, increasing the risk of accidents, especially at night or in poorly lit areas. The animals scavenge through garbage, creating unsanitary conditions and potential health risks. Citizens express concern over the rising number of stray cattle and the lack of action from the municipal corporation. Civic and social circles urge authorities to take ownership of the situation by impounding or capturing the animals. Residents demand relocation of the cattle to designated cattle shelters (Gowshalas) to ensure public safety and hygiene.
Sukkur’s municipal corporation needs to implement a comprehensive plan to address the stray cattle issue. Cooperation between authorities, animal welfare organizations, and citizens is crucial for a sustainable solution.
Implementing existing regulations and exploring new measures to control stray cattle populations is essential.
Ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and animals requires immediate and decisive action from the authorities. A collaborative approach and effective solutions are key to tackling this growing problem in Sukkur.
