Sukkur seething over substandard construction works: Civic Circles demand action
Dr Abdul Waheed Mastoi
SUKKUR: A storm of discontent is brewing in Sukkur as citizens rage against the alleged use of substandard materials and questionable practices in ongoing construction projects. The situation has become particularly alarming with reports of recently constructed footpaths being dug up and rebuilt, raising concerns about quality and accountability.
According to sources, complaints regarding the use of poor materials in development works are widespread. However, the recent trend of dismantling newly built sidewalks, allegedly with the involvement of officials and contractors, has sparked outrage. Residents in Dadu Chowk, Gharibabad, and Shikarpur Road have reported witnessing this disturbing practice, where old bricks are used to replace supposedly new ones.
Furthermore, the pace of construction is sluggish, attributed to negligence by the Works and Services Roads Department and Health Engineer. This sluggishness, coupled with the use of subpar materials, has resulted in debris piling up on major city roads, posing a safety hazard for pedestrians and vehicles alike.
Civic and social circles have expressed deep concern over these issues. They have urged higher authorities to take immediate notice and demand action against officials and contractors responsible for wasting public funds and inflicting inconvenience upon the citizenry.
This incident highlights the urgent need for stricter quality control measures and increased accountability in Sukkur’s development projects. Only through transparent practices and the use of quality materials can the city ensure the well-being of its residents and the durability of its infrastructure.
